The RTO at the CCO
The Repertory Training Orchestra (RTO) is a vibrant, free summer reading orchestra designed to keep community musicians and conductors connected, inspired, and actively making music during the off-season. Sponsored by the Concord Chamber Orchestra and launched in summer 2026, this unique program brings together instrumentalists ages 16 and older to read through and explore the core symphonic repertoire, strengthen sight-reading skills, and stay musically engaged throughout the summer.
Unlike a traditional performance ensemble, the RTO focuses on the experience of playing great music rather than preparing for a concert. Participants have the opportunity to explore a wide range of masterworks, encounter new repertoire, and enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of bringing orchestral scores to life in a relaxed, supportive setting.
The RTO also serves as a valuable training ground for conductors. Through a rotating roster of guest conductors, participants benefit from a variety of musical perspectives, while conductors gain meaningful podium time and the opportunity to develop rehearsal techniques, score study skills, and ensemble leadership in front of musicians. It is a collaborative environment where both players and conductors can learn, experiment, and grow.
